Idols – Day 20

Romans 1:25

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

The Thought

Paul’s letter to the Romans begins with him declaring his longing to visit the believers there, but very quickly he moved on to what he really wanted to say, to begin to correct the behaviour he had heard about, and didn’t like. He calls the people who worship images of birds, animals and reptiles “fools” (Romans 1:22-23). They had fallen into idolatry.

But Paul’s criticism goes further saying that God’s punishment was to abandon them and give them over to the sinful desires of their hearts (verse 24). That resulted in homosexuality! Another form of idolatry.

Most of the cities across the world today have small communities of the people Paul was thinking about when he wrote this letter, and his passion was to see them put right with God, Does the church have the same passion today?

I have often heard it said that we must love the sinner whilst hating the sin. We must pray for forgiveness and for the truth of God to be revealed to them. All the time remembering that we must “hate the sin, but love the sinner”! Let’s do that today remembering that Jesus said Let anyone of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone… (John 8:7).

Action

Pray for any you know today who have fallen into idolatry in the form of homosexuality. Pray especially for the church to make its message clear and teach Biblical principles to all their members.

Read Romans 1 today and understand Paul’s frustration, but also feel his heart for people to get right with God and follow Christ.

Praise God that He is slow to anger and quick to forgive (Nehemiah 9:17).
