Idols – Day 2

Exodus 32:3-5

All the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then he said “These are your gods, Israel who brought you out of Egypt.” Aaron built an altar in front of the calf…

The Thought

What a tragic situation this is. Moses was at the top of the mountain conversing with God and had been away for quite a while, so the people were getting frustrated thinking that God was keeping their leader too long when they actually had expected to cross the desert, and arrive in the Land of Promise much quicker than seemed to be happening. Frustration and lack of understanding can lead to sin! Serious sin!

The Israelites had no idea how much they needed to learn before they would be ready for the promised land, they did not recognise what was right and wrong in the eyes of God, and one problem led to another.

Their frustration at Moses’ absence and at not moving more quickly to their destination led to Aaron making an idol even though they all knew the rules that God had laid down early in their journey. The saddest thing is that Aaron, the priest, didn’t remember what God had said either!

Action

Ask yourself today if you understand God’s rules for our time. They haven’t changed!

Does your church leader speak the truth about what the Bible says about the issues of today? Do you?

Read Exodus 32 and feel Moses’ emotion as he argues with The Lord (verses 11-14).

Pray for guidance in leading your family, friends colleagues or neighbours to understanding more about Biblical truths.
