Idols – Day 10

Acts 7:41

That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and revelled in what their own hands had made.

The Thought

This chapter gives us the final speech of the first Christian martyr, Stephen, who used his last moments on earth to give one of the best evangelistic speeches in our Bible. Stephen told anyone who cared to listen a brief history of his people, the Jewish nation, Israel.

We looked at the situation Stephen is talking about on Day 2 where we read about Aaron making an idol like a calf. The people didn’t call it an idol, they said these are your gods! What an unbelievable lie from the first “High priest” of God’s people!

An “idol” is just another word for a false god, a statue or anything else that people are tempted to worship. Many people think that they are harmless, but they are not. There are demonic forces involved. Ever since the garden of Eden satan has been trying to deter people from hearing the truth of what God is saying:- Did God really say… (Genesis 3:1). We must learn to resist him in every situation.

Isaiah 14:12-15 refers to Satan’s fall from heaven, as does Ezekiel 28:11-19, where he is referred to as the King of Tyre. The description in those verses describes most of what we know about satan.

The spiritual world is real and powerful and satan and his demonic forces who were once angels will try anything to distract us from worshipping Jesus.

Action

Pray for protection today for yourself and those you care for from anything that is not of God.

Read Acts 7 and be challenged about how well you would have spoken in similar circumstances.

If you have the time read some of the other references given above.
