Haggai – Day 26

Haggai 2:15-16

Now give careful thought to this from this day on — consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the Lord’s temple. When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.

The Thought

The Lord is reminding His people once more, that they must put Him first. Their very first commandment given by the Lord to Moses told them You shall have no other gods before Me (Exodus 20:1)!

In not serving God as He desired, and by putting their own priorities first, the people had, in God’s eyes committed adultery, leaving their first love (Revelation 2:4)! So God did something that only He could do. He diminished their provisions, and suddenly they were all realising that when they thought they had enough grain left for the winter, they had only half what they expected. The same with their wine production!

This was a recurring theme for God. Two centuries earlier, Amos had told the people the same thing!

I gave you empty stomachs in every city, and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me, declares the Lord. …I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another. One field had rain; another had none and dried up – (Amos 4:6-7).

Action

Read Amos 4 today and be challenged by the words of that Old Testament prophet. Ask The Lord to show you if you are lacking in your giving. Ask for His help to trust Him more.

Then read Malachi 3 and be encouraged: Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
