Gifts & Giving – Day 11

Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

The Thought

Today we look at one of the better known verses that tells us to give. A much preached-on verse in today’s church worldwide. Most of us who have been church goers will have heard this or similar verses encouraging us to be generous at the time of the offering.

But is it just talking about finance? There are many things we can give without thinking of cash, cheques or bank cards.

Most of our neighbours, colleagues, friends and chance contacts need love. If I am a Christian and know I am loved by Jesus then I have a job to do in going and telling everyone I meet that they are loved by Him too.

I am not suggesting that we go rushing up to everyone and over power them with a sermon or even a message. There are so many more ways of showing His love than speaking.

A needy tramp in the street, or an out-of-work teenager, a sandwich would be welcomed. For a colleague who looks like he has had a bad weekend, a coffee and a listening ear would be a help. For an adolescent struggling with school, helpful suggestions or just time out doing something else would be appreciated.

The verse today tells us that whatever we give will be replaced, not just replaced, but multiplied back to us. Why? So that we can give more.

Action

As you go about your day today ask God to show you who you can help and how.

Pray for the people you see in the supermarket, in the car park, on the street and ask God to reveal His gift of Jesus to each one.
