The Fig Tree – Day 20

But Zacchaeus was determined that day and finally climbed a tree. That in itself was a step towards humility, but maybe he thought he would be hidden in the tree. Nobody can hide from Jesus, He sees our every hiding place! There was total conviction and an offer to put things right!

Luke 19:4

So Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed a fig tree to see Jesus, who was coming that way.

The Thought

Many years after the Israelites had settled in their own land, the fig tree had become very common, offering shade to passers by, but on this occasion it became a high place for a short man!

The next verse tells us that Zaccheus was a tax collector, so he was working for the Romans, and was wealthy. That gives us two reasons for the people to dislike him, and not let him through to the front where he would be able to see the passers by.

But Zacchaeus was determined that day and finally climbed a tree. That in itself was a step towards humility, but maybe he thought he would be hidden in the tree.

Nobody can hide from Jesus, He sees our every hiding place!

The crowd could not understand why Jesus would want to go to His home. I suppose Zacchaeus couldn’t either, but the fact that He did had a profound effect. He looked into Jesus’ face and immediately understood his own sin! There was total conviction and an offer to put things right!

Action

What would your reaction be if Jesus came in the flesh to your house today? Would you feel humbled, guilty, enthusiastic? He is there in the Spirit because our God is omniscient, and omnipresent. Let’s rejoice in that today.
