Creation – Day 13

This is the first mention of God blessing something. He was obviously happy with all that He had created up to this point, because we read that He saw that it was good! God spoke aloud to His creation telling them what to do. Be fruitful and multiply!

Genesis 1:22-23

God blessed them and said “Be fruitful and increase in number, and fill the water in the seas and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

The Thought

This is the first mention of God blessing something. He was obviously happy with all that He had created up to this point, because we read that “He saw that it was good”! (verses 4, 9, 12, 18 & 21). But He actually blessed the living creatures, the birds, animals, and mankind. The Hebrew word in this context is barak which can mean simply to bless. But most times it suggests something spoken. God spoke aloud to His creation telling them what to do. “Be fruitful and multiply!”

Many people speak to their dogs today telling them to sit, lie down, stop barking. God, in the same way, gave His orders to all the created creatures. And they all obeyed!! They increased and filled the earth.

In His famous “sermon on the mount” Jesus told many who felt like the underdog that they were blessed, (Matthew 5:3-12) reminding them that Father God sees everything that happens on the earth.

Throughout the Bible priests have blessed people, and the same continues today in most synagogues and churches, but the most well known blessing today is the one made famous by all the different language renderings on Youtube. It’s origin is found in Numbers 6 when God gave Moses The words the priests were to say when blessing their people.

Action

Declare these words today over all you love and care for, and maybe some you don’t!

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.
(Numbers 6:24-26)
