Commandments – Day 31

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

The Thought

What a good message these verses give us to end this study! They really need no explanation or comments.

Much is said in sermons, prayer meetings, Bible studies and counselling. But often, all we really need to do is know the ten commandments, meditate on them and put them into practice daily.

How sad it is that so many millions of people across the earth have never heard their message, or read these verses, which are the closing message of the book of Ecclesiastes.

Of course the whole Bible is important, and many verses can surprise us or shout at us at different stages of life or in difficult situations. We should read it with our hearts open to intervention from Holy Spirit.

The name Ecclesiastes is often translated teacher and in Greek it means “One who addresses an assembly”. It is credited to King Solomon, son of David, who started the first chapter with an honest announcement of what he was thinking. That there was no point in anything! “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!” We can understand that he was having a bad day, or going through a serious depression. Maybe he had been a spoilt child, had done everything he ever wanted to do and now saw no future in anything! Many of us have met people like that!

Action

Read some of Ecclesiastes today and pray for others you know who might be going through similar things.

Praise God that at the end of Solomon’s life he seemed to turn back to God and to try to keep the commandments.

Thank God for anything you have learned about His commands through this study.
