Mysteries and Secrets – Day 18

Most of us who read the Bible regularly find there are things we do not understand fully. Or we think we do until something suddenly becomes clearer than it ever has before. Sometimes a verse we have not taken much note of can shout at us with a deep message.

Colossians 1:26

The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people.

The Thought

What is this mystery that has been made clear to us, the Lord’s people, and by suggestion, not to others? According to the previous verse, it is the Word of God in all its fulness (v25). The suggestion is that the Jewish nation could not understand the message of God’s word contained in the Old Testament, until they understood who Jesus was, and just how much of their scriptures referred to Him, who He is, where He came from, and what that means if we accept His Lordship in our lives.

Most of us who read the Bible regularly find there are things that we don’t understand fully. Or we think we do until something suddenly becomes clearer than it ever has before. Sometimes a verse we have not really taken much note of can “shout” at us with a deep message for a specific situation we are experiencing, or trying to understand.

The writer of Hebrews had obviously experienced that when he wrote For the word of God is alive, and active. Sharper than a double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

Action

Read Colossians 1 today and think about the message that Paul was trying to convey to his readers. The first thirteen verses are a positive introduction and must have been a real encouragement to the faithful members of the Colossian church.

Think about your own community, whether small or large, and ask yourself if this chapter speaks of them. Pray for the areas where you are not so good at obeying what Jesus expects of his followers.
