Commandments – Day 5
I wonder today how many people, even believers, disobey this commandment. Too much of our everyday language comes from the media, films, TV and facebook! Most people do not know the commandments and have no idea that some of the language they use is an abomination to our Father God.
Exodus 20:7
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
The Thought
I wonder today, in writing this verse, how many people, even believers, disobey this commandment. Too much of our everyday language comes from the media, films, TV and facebook, instagram or tiktok! Most people running those worlds do not know the commandments and have no idea that some of the language they use is an abomination to our Father God.
The scary part of this verse is that the guilty ones will be punished! Unless of course there is repentance which is always available through Jesus who took our sins to the cross.
Often people use bad language in order to be accepted by others in their peer group. Most of us have had a time in our life when we longed for acceptance in some form.
The book of Proverbs has much to say about the language we use. Here are a few examples, all from the same chapter, but most chapters in proverbs have something to say about this subject:-
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels, they go down to the innermost parts!– Proverbs 18:8.
In a lawsuit, the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross examines.– Proverbs 18:17.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.– Proverbs 18:21.
Action
Take note as you go through your day today how many people use swear words in some form. Pray for them.
Ask yourself if your everyday language is honouring to The Lord, and be quick to repent if it isn’t. Ask Him to purify your tongue.
Read some of Proverbs today and note how many references to the tongue, or words, or speech there are!
