The Fig Tree – Day 21

Many years after the Israelites had settled in their promised land they had become comfortable and were no longer serious about their faith as previous generations had been. They were living as they liked, and taking the Lord for granted. It could be a description of our world today.

Jeremiah 5:15-17

Nation of Israel, I’m going to bring a nation from far away to attack you, declares the Lord. It is a nation that has lasted a long time. It is an ancient nation. … They are all mighty warriors. They will devour your harvest and your food. They will devour your sons and your daughters. They will devour your flocks and your cattle. They will devour your grapevines and your fig trees. With their swords they will destroy the fortified cities you trust.

The Thought

Many years after the Israelites had settled in their promised land they had become comfortable and were no longer serious about their faith as previous generations had been. They were living as they liked, and taking the Lord for granted. Read this chapter from the beginning to see what was upsetting God so much. It could be a description of much of our world today.

The Lord could find no honest people there. He raised up several prophets to warn them that if they didn’t put things right with Him they would lose what was precious to them. The problem was that everything the Lord had given them they were now taking for granted! They had forgotten that all that they now owned was because of the struggles of their ancestors, and the intervention of the Almighty God.

Action

Do we realise how much our ancestors’ lives affect who we are today? Think about your inheritance; characteristics, abilities, faith, and thank God for the people from whom you inherited those things, whether you knew them or not.

If you have a poor spiritual inheritance thank Father God that being adopted by Him changes everything (Ephesians 1:5).

Ask yourself if you are listening to God and His prophets today. Is international news having more effect on you than God’s word? The media is spreading fear and bad news: remember that the Bible tells us 365 times to not be afraid. Find some of those verses for yourself today and be encouraged.
