The Fig Tree – Day 11

Mark 11:12-14

The next day, when they left Bethany, Jesus became hungry. In the distance he saw a fig tree with leaves. He went to see if he could find any figs on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves because it wasn’t the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, “No one will ever eat fruit from you again!” His disciples heard this.

The Thought

I mention this same story a second time because there is so much to learn from it. In this version of the story from the Gospel of Mark we read that “it was not the season for figs!!” Jesus must have known that. So why then did He expect to find fruit out of season?

I don’t know. But if the whole episode is recorded so that we learn something I can guess that one of the lessons is that in God’s kingdom there is no “out of season”. Anytime and all the time He expects us to bear fruit for Him. Anytime and all the time we should be doing what Jesus asks His followers to do.

The last phrase in the verses above is a challenge for us. Are we who consider ourselves followers of Jesus really hearing what He says?

Let’s ask ourselves today if we are doing what we should be for the Kingdom of God.

Are we living as children of a perfect heavenly Father?

Are we doing what He asks us to do; healing the sick, feeding the hungry, blessing others in whatever way we can?

Are we rescuing people from enemy hands?

Action

Pray that you will not miss any opportunity to do what Jesus is asking you to do. Whether that means feeding those who are physically poor, (the beggars at the side of the streets) or the spiritually poor: those who don’t know the Lord and don’t yet have an inheritance in Heaven (Hebrews 9:15).
