1 John – Day 2

John makes no introduction, he jumps straight in with the truth as he sees it. He wants us to understand that this is NOT a fairy story. It is true. Why did Jesus call them to follow Him and not other people? They must have asked themselves that many times.

1 John 1:1-3

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us.

The Thought

This book is one of my favourites in the New Testament, and these opening verses are the reason why! John makes no introduction, he jumps straight in with the truth as he sees it. He wants us to understand that this is NOT a fairy story. It is true.

In case we don’t understand that from his first verse, he continues through the next two verses.

The tone of voice I hear him using as I imagine him giving this as a spoken message to a group of believers is one of amazement. First, that Jesus came to them, and that He personally saw Him, touched Him and spent time with Him.

After I had had a whole series of visions of The Lion of Judah in 2000, I often asked myself “why me?” Why would Jesus reveal Himself like that to me? I have never found a satisfying answer, but I can tell you that I am so glad He did. That’s how John and the first disciples must have felt. Why did Jesus call them to follow Him and not other people? They must have asked themselves that many times.

Action

Read aloud those verses above slowly and listen to your own voice. Ask yourself if you are totally convinced that it is true?

Pray today to believe more whole-heartedly, trust Jesus more, and be bolder in sharing Him with others.
