1 John – Day 10
Do things you have heard remain in you? I can think of times when I have heard something and then could not get it out of my mind. John tells us what the consequences are IF we remember the truth, and by suggestion, what will happen if we do not.
1 John 2:24-25
As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what He promised us – eternal life.
The Thought
Do things you have heard “remain in you”? I can think of many times when I have heard something and then couldn’t get it out of my mind, but quite often that has been bad news, when a tragedy has happened. But after a while, life continues for me as normal and the pain or the emotions ease. The closer I am to the suffering ones, the longer the pain lasts.
John is talking here about the message of salvation becoming so much a part of our lives that we never get used to it, that it becomes a vibrant part of our lives, never to become too comfortable. He wants what Jesus did to be always in the forefront of our minds, so that we are ready at any moment to tell others what Jesus has done for us.
One of the most important words in these verses today is “If”. John tells us what will be the consequences IF we remember the truth, and by suggestion, what will happen if we don’t.
Eternal life is the promise, but don’t imagine that it will be like our earthly lives going on forever. It is beyond our imagination, and only Holy Spirit can reveal it’s truth to us and give us a real heavenly taste for what goes on there.
Action
Ask yourself today how much Jesus’ love for you, in taking your sins and sicknesses to the cross, affects your life. Is it really a part of you?
Do you consider yourself “in Him”?
Spend a few moments, (or more if you can) thinking about what Heaven must really be like.
