The Spiritual Blessings – Day 6

Redemption is one of the key words for understanding the Christian faith. Once we understand that we are far from perfect, and that each of needs to be redeemed from our sins and to receive the grace of God in our lives, then things begin to become clearer.

Ephesians 1:7

Through the blood of his Son, we are set free (redeemed) from our sins.

The Thought

When I was a child in a traditional church we often sang songs about redemption. I never really understood what it meant, and never thought to ask anyone. Neither did anyone ever try to explain it to me. Maybe that was your experience too?

But redemption is one of the key words for understanding the Christian faith. Once we understand that we are far from perfect, and that each of needs to be redeemed from our sins and to receive the grace of God in our lives, then things begin to become clearer.

It helps too to read the books of Exodus and Leviticus in the Old Testament. There we see how the Israelites were told by the Lord to sacrifice animals for different sins they had committed. God knew that we needed to be able to let go of the effects of our wrong doings. Before the beginning of time He planned on coming Himself in the form of Jesus to bring that redemption for us. How amazing is that?

Once we have met Jesus and made Him Lord of our lives, we can then begin to change. We can let Him redeem us totally from all the effects of sin in our lives. In one way it is a done deal. But often it takes us years to really understand and live in that place of freedom from the effects of past sins. Our own sins as well as those in our family line.

Action

Read John 1:12-13 and see that Jesus is offering us a way out of the consequence of sin. He gives us the choice of “becoming a child of God”. God doesn’t force things on us. Life with Him, and how far we go in that life, how many blessings we receive … all that is only limited by our choices.
