Commandments – Day 29

Deuteronomy 7:9

The Lord your God is God. He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands.

The Thought

This encouraging message was declared by Moses who knew God personally better than anyone else on earth at that time. It is an encouragement to each one of us to watch our behaviour. For many of us, if we had known this verse several years ago we would have thought twice before getting into some of the things we were involved in. Thank God for His forgiveness, and that He never gives up on us.

Even today, it is good for us all to remember that obeying His commands will bless not only us, but our children and their children’s lives throughout many generations! The opposite works too. The sins that God hates have an effect on several generations following us.

Thinking about that reminds us that when we accept Jesus as Saviour, we become children of God. The sins of our forefathers no longer have the right to affect our lives.

My own experience of that is when I was getting depressed about varicose veins, which I knew my father had suffered from. I read that they could be caused by anger. So I discussed this with The Lord, knowing that anger was not one of my problems. He reminded me of my family line. I prayed for forgiveness for the anger of my ancestors. And within a few days my veins were totally normal!

Action

Read Deuteronomy 28 for a long list of curses and blessings which can be passed down through the generations.

Ask God today if there is anything hereditary in your family that should be stopped, and can be stopped by prayer.

Pray for the next generation in your wider family to be more aware of the hereditary results of disobedience to The Lord.
