Habakkuk – Day 30

Habakkuk 3:17-18

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour.

The Thought

What an encouraging decision Habakkuk makes after his debate with the Lord. As he contemplated the idea of no harvest of grapes figs or olives, he understood that for many of his culture at that time it meant no income, no food, and severe difficulty.

That decision is an example for all of us, to remind ourselves that God NEVER changes. He sees our problems and our rebellion. And everything that happens can be used as a learning process with Him.

The New Testament tells us “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). In the “great commission” at the end of Matthew’s gospel Jesus promised to be with His disciples ALWAYS! Once the Holy Spirit had arrived at Pentecost (Acts 2), the disciples understood much more. They began the work of changing the world knowing that Holy Spirit would be with them, inspire them, and protect them, no matter what happened.

Whatever our problems, we can make a decision to do as Habakkuk did and rejoice in the Lord who never changes, who is “all seeing and all knowing”, and loves us more than we can imagine.

Action

Ask yourself today how you cope in difficult times. Do you have Habakkuk’s confidence?

Look back on difficulties you have got through and praise God for His faithfulness to you even when you take your eyes off Him and are steeped in self pity, or too busy to think.

Pray for those who are suffering much more than you are; in the war torn areas of the world, or suffering from famine or financial hardship.
