Psalm 119 – Day 14

Psalm 119:61-64

Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts. The earth is filled with your love, Lord; teach me your decrees.

The Thought

The first line here makes us think that David had been reading the book of Judges and was remembering that many years earlier, the leader of Israel, the strong man Samson had been bound with ropes (Judges 15). We can imagine David reading the history of Israel, or hearing about it at the synagogue, and thinking about what he would do in the same circumstances. Maybe, in those days Samson was something of a hero among young boys at “synagogue school” before their Bah Mitzvah, the coming of age ceremony for boys, in Jewish communities.

When David was not able to sleep, he got up to praise God. That was much better than tossing and turning and being frustrated because he couldn’t sleep! Maybe he wrote many of his psalms during the night. Personally, I write most of these studies during the early hours of the morning when the house is quiet and there are no distractions!

As David watched the sheep at night, he had plenty of time to think pray, reflect and write psalms. What a blessing that time must have been for him. Developing his relationship with God in those days was great preparation for the adult life God had prepared for him!

Action

Who are the “heroes” of the young boys in your family or neighbourhood? Pray for Biblical heroes for those young people that you know.

In a later psalm David wrote Where can I go from Your presence? (Psalm 139:7). Read that psalm today and be encouraged.
