Psalm 119 – Day 9

Psalm 119:36-40

Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to Your word. Fulfil Your promise to Your servant, so that You may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for Your laws are good. How I long for Your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.

The Thought

It sounds from the first two lines in this part of David’s psalm, that there was a battle going on in his mind. He was being tempted by selfish gain; to go his own way and do as he liked, but he recognised that this would be nothing more than selfishness, and really in the depth of his heart he knew that God is victor, and the only one worth following.

Those same temptations are all around us today, in fact they are much closer than they were for David. We now have internet invading the lives of our children and grandchildren. Sadly many parents do not see the danger of some of the things that are available on our screens.

David asked God to fulfil His promise. That sounds like a personal promise that David received from The Lord. It could have been in their private conversations during David’s “sheep watching” days. It could also have been that amazing day when he was anointed to be king by Samuel in front of his father and his seven brothers (1 Samuel 16:13).

Action

Pray today for the next generation in your own family and those who live around you. Pray that there would be a Christian culture in your neighbourhood, and that whole families will take on the responsibility of trying to save the next generation from self destruction.

Ask God to bring the right leaders into your area. Is He calling you to get involved more with your church or local government?
