Jonah – Day 12

Jonah 2:6-7

To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in for ever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O Lord my God. When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

The Thought

These words describe some of the worst of the moments of Jonah’s suffering. After the sailors threw him into the sea and he was heading downwards, he must have prayed panic prayers. Was he tossed by the violent movements of the sea? Or did the miraculous calming happen immediately? We can’t be sure. But we can be absolutely certain that Jonah was not in a good place, physically, spiritually or emotionally! He felt himself very near to death!

When he believed himself to be at the end of his life Jonah cried out to the Lord, and called Him “my God”. Do you know people who have done that?

I know quite a lot of people I hope will do that, many who have heard about the goodness of Father God, but have chosen, for the moment to go in a different direction. I pray that each one of them will call out to the Lord before their final moments in this life, and I pray for a merciful God to rescue them.

Action

Praise God for His mercy, and forgiveness, even to the point of being a last minute rescuer.

Thank God for His rescue plan for mankind, and that even in our strange modern world He is still working His plans for the earth and every individual who responds to His call.

Pray for each one of those you know and care about who have not yet accepted Jesus as Lord of their lives. Pray that they will call out to Him before it is too late.
