Nehemiah – Day 31
As Ezra read from the scriptures, the people were touched and all ended up in tears. Tears of sadness for the sins of their forefathers, and tears of joy because they were in their homeland where they belonged, and tears too because at last they understood what God had said.
Nehemiah 8:10
Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
The Thought
The last sentence of this verse is often quoted in the context of having the strength to keep going with what God has called you to do, just as Nehemiah continued to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem in the face of many difficulties and much opposition. But in context this verse has nothing to do with wall building! That was finished in the preceding chapter!
It was much more about being obedient to God’s law. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. (Nehemiah 8:8).
As Ezra read from the scriptures, the people were touched and all ended up in tears. Tears of sadness for the sins of their forefathers, and tears of joy because they were in their homeland where they belonged, and tears too because at last they understood what God had said. It was in reaction to their tears that Nehemiah gave them the order in verse 10 above.
Their celebration continued for seven days, with much repentance for the sins of their fathers. And there were other celebrations after that one. The wall was consecrated with much praise and worship (Nehemiah 12:27-47). Certain others were brought back from outside the territory, priests and leaders were appointed, and Nehemiah continued with other reforms.
