Psalm 23 – Day 3

During the early life of David as a shepherd boy, he learned much that would be useful later in life. Because of those early lessons he could say with confidence that he was short of nothing. God never let him down, and he will not let you down either.

Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

The Thought

During David’s early life as a shepherd boy, he learned much that would be useful later in life. Because of those early lessons he could say with confidence that he was short of nothing.

We could speculate here whether he is talking about finance, daily provisions, or more luxurious things he would like. But it is clear that his confidence was in God. And if we read on through David’s life in the first and second books of Samuel, we find that even though he went through great difficulties, he always relied on and expected God to be his provider. God didn’t let him down, and he won’t let you down either.

When David was successful he gave God the praise, and when he was in difficulty he sought God’s help. If he did things wrong and left the “straight and narrow” road that leads to success (Matthew 7:13-14) he was quick to repent and turn back in the right direction.

When David was leading the army as king, he had a group of “mighty men” (2 Samuel 23:8) who were his faithful warriors and servants. They were always ready to make sure that their king lacked nothing he desired.

Action

Ask yourself today what it would mean for you to “lack nothing”. Believe that God has provided everything you need, remembering that He sees the bigger picture.

Can you look back on your life and see how the Lord provided for you in a time of need, and how he prepared you for where you are today, or even what you may be doing in the future?

Give Him praise today for all that He has taught you, for the times he has protected you from the wrong people, from getting into difficulties, from going in the wrong direction. Thank God for the people around you who are a help in time of need.
