Psalm 23 – Day 2

1 Samuel 16:7-8

The Lord said to Samuel, do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

The Thought

God told Samuel to go and anoint one of Jesse’s sons as King Saul’s replacement. Samuel looked at the 7 brothers which Jesse presented before him and thought that each one looked suitable, but no, God had other plans.

The youngest of the brothers was out in the fields caring for the sheep. That’s where he learned about caring for others. That’s where he learned that God was his shepherd, and where Psalm 23 and many others were birthed.

The Bible doesn’t tell us why David’s brothers rejected him. But they didn’t have a good word to say to him when he took food to them later on, when they were serving in Saul’s army facing the giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17:38).

While David was a shepherd, he learned much about fighting an enemy. Later in 1 Samuel 17 we read of him telling king Saul how he fought off lion and bear in order to rescue his sheep. He had no idea at that time that he was in training to become king!

Action

If the Lord looks at your heart today, what will He see? Will He be encouraged? Or will He be disappointed that you haven’t followed His commandments?

Will He see you as a giant killer? Or a future king?

Think about the things you are doing today (even if you are not enjoying them). Maybe they are preparing you for something the Lord needs you for later on in life.

Pray that you accomplish in this life all that The Lord has planned for you.
