Nehemiah – Day 5

Nehemiah 1:8-9

Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

The Thought

It’s good to remind God of His word, showing Him that you know it and that you remember what He has said. In recognising the sin that had caused the exile, Nehemiah quoted God’s word back to Him (Deuteronomy 4:27).

All through the desert wanderings of the Jewish people, God was teaching them that obedience would lead to prosperity and blessings, and disobedience would lead to struggles, loss and suffering.

The Israelites had been exiled because they were unfaithful to their Heavenly Father. Many of them had turned to other gods. They had built idols and sacrificed to them, even though they were only man-made models from stone or wood.

In Exodus 20 we find the 10 commandments. These were not given by a strict Father who wanted to keep His people subjugated, or enjoyed punishing His children. But by a loving Father who wanted to protect each one of His loved ones from the enemy.

That is a theme that runs right through the Old Testament and is personified in Jesus. He demonstrated His Father’s love in His teachings and His miraculous healings. He came to do what the priests should have been doing but had failed because of their religious activities and mindsets.

Action

Read Exodus 20:1-17 today and thank God for those guidelines for life that have blessed and encouraged millions of people through the ages.

Remember some of the promises that God has given you through His word.

Claim those promises for yourself and those you love.
