Nehemiah – Day 30

Nehemiah 8:1

All the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

The Thought

Enter Ezra the priest! Everyone was now settled in their own homes. The walls were completed. The city was secure. It was time to really find out more about the rules God had laid down for them. They had lived more than 60 years in exile caused by disobedience, and this generation didn’t want that to happen again.

It would take a long time for the “book of the law” to be read. The 27 chapters of Leviticus give us Moses’ conversation with God in the tent of meeting while the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness. It makes interesting reading, and much of it is relevant to today.

Deuteronomy 28 also gives us a part of Moses farewell speech before the Israelite wanderers entered the promised land without him. It is very clear that obedience to The Lord would bring huge blessings, and disobedience would bring horrific curses! This is not because God enjoys punishing anyone, He doesn’t! The consequences listed in that chapter were meant as a deterrent so that everyone would be obedient and enjoy full health and prosperity. How sad God must have been when the Israelites were all tempted by other gods and other ways of life. How sad He must be today when He looks at much of the earth. But let’s not get disheartened, there is a revival beginning which will touch those of us who pray, wherever we are.

Action

Read Deuteronomy 28, and pray today for the worldwide church to fully obey God’s basic laws rather than their own interpretation on them.

Pray for clarity in your own life of obedience while continuing all that you are busy with.
