Nehemiah – Day 21

Nehemiah 4:16-20

From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armour. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.
Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”

The Thought

Because of the problems they were facing Nehemiah set up new “Battle plans”. But note that his first priority remained the same as it had been before he spoke to King Artaxerxes. To rebuild the wall and make Jerusalem secure. His goal never changed.

Nehemiah’s workers all respected him and saw the sense in his orders so they were obedient and stayed confident in his leadership. They must also have been encouraged by seeing all that had been achieved.

One trumpeter doesn’t sound a lot, but it meant no confusion and whenever the people heard a trumpet there would be no doubt where it came from and they would respond to the call to go to that place.

Action

Pray that your “first priority” will remain first and not be pushed out by the pressures of the day which can be many.

Whatever enemy might be coming against you right now, find encouragement in this book of Nehemiah, and the last phrase of today’s verses. Our God will fight for us!

Look back on your spiritual life and note some of the achievements you and The Lord have accomplished together. Be encouraged.
