Mountains – Day 8
A study of the character of Peter would be a good idea. He was such an impetuous person. Always the one to speak first, jump in with the good suggestion, get out of the boat…! The story today is no different. His fear made him say something without thinking.
Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
A study of the character of Peter would be a good idea. He was such an impetuous person. Always the one to speak first, jump in with the good suggestion, get out of the boat… (Matthew 14:29)!
The story today is no different. His fear made him say something without thinking. He wanted to do something practical to make people think he was not afraid. I am sure in the following days he kicked himself for saying what he said. What good would shelters be to people who lived in Heaven, and were obviously here on a temporary visit? In Matthew’s account of this story we read that Peter, began with “Master, if You wish…” (Matthew 17:4). That was a good sign; he really, in his heart, only wanted to do what Jesus wished.
But Peter was stopped from any of his good suggestions, by the Voice of God! What Father God said to Peter, and James and John who were struck dumb with the experience, He is still saying to Jesus’ followers today. “Listen to my Son”!
Reflect today on God’s words to the disciples and to you, “Listen to My Son!”
Ask yourself how much time you spend doing that, either through Bible reading, or just by sitting in silence and focusing on hearing His voice.
What do you do when you are afraid?
Ask yourself today if you really want to do only what Jesus would have you do?
