Mountains – Day 17

Psalm 50:11

I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.

The Thought

God is stating the obvious here. The people of Israel knew who He was, and understood that He had created everything that existed. Unfortunately, several generations on from those who had wandered in the wilderness and seen amazing miracles, the faith of many had grown weak. They were going through the motions of doing what God had asked of them, but their hearts were far from Him (Isaiah 29:13).

In the following verses of today’s psalm The Lord is making it very clear that He does not appreciate the “sacrifices” which the people make unless their hearts are for Him.

It is a good psalm to remember when we give our offerings to our churches or to other needs in the world. God does not need our money, or our prayers. He desperately wants our hearts. He finishes the psalm with to the blameless I will show my salvation (Psalm 50:23).

This psalm was written by Asaph who was a Levite and one of the leaders permanently in charge of the temple music. Twelve psalms are attributed to him or to his family members. His family are mentioned in the book of Ezra as members of the tribes coming back from the exile to Babylon. 128 of them were singers.

It looks like the gift of music passed from generation to generation!

Action

Ask yourself today if you have any traits that have passed through your generations. Praise God for the good ones and ask Him to nullify the bad ones!!

If you don’t know any of your family line because of difficult circumstances in the past, remember that once we become children of God, adopted into his family, we can begin to inherit His characteristics. What a gift that is!

Read Psalm 50 slowly and be blessed and encouraged in your walk with The Lord.
