A Living Sacrifice – Day 10

Romans 12:6

If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;

The Thought

The following few verses list some of the spiritual gifts that the Lord has left for His church. They make an interesting study!

If you think of the gifts being exercised in your church today, would prophecy be the first one you think of? Some churches really encourage people to speak out what they are hearing from God. In others it is important that you are in a position of leadership before being allowed to speak out. While in others there is no question of anyone other than the priest or pastor saying anything during a service. Sadly many think this gift doesn’t exist today.

The word “prophet” can be scary, and makes many of us think of people like Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, who wrote long books contained in the Old Testament with stories of strange visions and tales of their own sufferings when they became “Living sacrifices”. Or we think of Daniel who was sent to the lion’s den (Daniel 6)!

The word “prophesy” means “a revelation of hidden things” and there are many modern day prophets who are speaking out what God is saying and explaining to us the signs of the times. We must test what they are saying according to God’s Word, and ask Him for reassurance of what we hear, especially if the prophecy requires action on our part.

Prophecies don’t have to be long, sometimes just one word or picture can speak to several people.

Action

Pray today for the church worldwide to encourage the prophets to speak. Pray for your church or group to encourage this gift in your meetings.

As we look at the other gifts this week, ask God to help you and the members of your group to use them when and where He wants.

Give thanks for Jesus who was the perfect example of a prophet and a Living Sacrifice “doing only what His Father said to do” (John 14:31).
