Jude – Day 9

Jude 7

In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

The Thought

We read about Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Many of us know that story, but few of us know that other cities were destroyed at the same time; Admah and Zeboyim (Deuteronomy 29:23). The very nature of sin is that it has very few limits. When someone does something wrong, other people are affected directly and indirectly.

The men of Sodom and Gomorrah visited local towns to practice their ungodly behaviour. One of the natural traits of sin is that it is never satisfied. It always wants more. That is part of the nature of satan, he wants more and more people to fall into sin, and to betray God. Once people have succumbed to satan’s ways, they too are never satisfied, but they look for more and more ways to satisfy that unnatural problem whatever it may be.

A study of Lot who lived in Sodom, shows us what a weak character he was, very different to his uncle Abraham. Lot didn’t protect his family, and even suggested that the men of the town have sex with his own virgin daughters rather than with the angelic visitors as they wanted (Genesis 19:8)!

Later on, Lot succumbed to too much alcohol and as a result fathered his own grandchildren, both of whom fathered tribes which became enemies of God’s people much later: the Moabites, and the Ammonites (Genesis 19:36-38).

The consequences of sin have long lasting results.

Action

Read Genesis 19 today and praise God for His redemption, His rescue plans for mankind. Pray for anyone you know who is struggling with sexual sin today. There is always forgiveness in Jesus.
