Jonah – Day 28

Jonah 4:8

When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

The Thought

God had been doing all that we have seen Him do in Jonah’s life because He was trying to make this reluctant prophet see what an amazing God he has. The Lord wanted praise and commitment from Jonah. As He wants from all of us, no matter how many or how few gifts we think we have.

Nothing God seemed to do had any long term effect on Jonah who was still entrenched in the world of self pity. He seems to have forgotten the amazing answer to prayer that he had after his time in the stomach of the whale. When he was spewed out of the fish’s mouth more or less unharmed!

He has not appreciated at all the fact that everyone in the city of Nineveh had listened to his word from The Lord. Nor that they had repented. And God was pleased about that. Jonah should have been rejoicing. But he stayed focused on himself and was miserable!

Sometimes we meet people who are so focused on their own problems that they cannot appreciate all that God is or has done in their lives. They just see what He doesn’t do for them.

Action

Pray for any you know who have a negative attitude to life. Pray for those who are entrenched in their own problems. If you have the opportunity, then visit them and encourage them today that we serve the God of the impossible. Maybe you can give them a brief resumé of the story of Jonah!

Praise God for the lessons He tried to teach Jonah, and is trying to teach us too.
