Gideon – 17

Having sounded the trumpet and rallied the troops Gideon finds himself now surrounded by an army ready to fight. That was when the doubts returned to his mind. Praise God for His patience with you when you have doubts about what He might be asking you to do.

Judges 6:37-38

“I’ll place some wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the wool while all the ground is dry, then I’ll know that you will rescue Israel through me, as you said.”
And that is what happened. The next morning Gideon got up early. He squeezed out a bowl full of water from the wool.

The Thought

Having sounded the trumpet and rallied the troops Gideon finds himself now surrounded by an army ready to fight. That’s when the doubts returned to his mind. Seeing himself responsible for thousands of men and the awful thought that he could be leading them to their death, he is once more afraid, needing confirmation. So he turned back to the Lord, overwhelmed by the task ahead of him.

Trying to overcome his doubts he put out a fleece, (an expression that has found its way into everyday language). The Lord honoured his test, and confirmed that He was in control. There was no sign of impatience by God even when in the next two verses we read of Gideon asking for a further sign. The opposite of the first one. First a wet fleece on dry ground, then a dry fleece on wet ground. How patient God was with Gideon and how patient He is with you and me when we have doubts and ask for signs.

Action

Praise God for His patience with you when you have doubts about what He might be asking you to do.
