Followers of Jesus – Day 30

Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Thought

This passage is often called “The Great Commission”. In evangelical churches it is one of the most preached on Bible passages.

It is interesting that Jesus says “ALL authority has been given to ME, therefore YOU go!”

It reminds me of a boss who doesn’t want to do something so sends the office boy instead. But of course it isn’t like that at all! Jesus is sending out those who have spent time with Him, those who have taken to heart everything He has taught. They were a mixed bunch, with different abilities, and gifts.

The other interesting thing is that those early missionaries were to baptise people in the name of The Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Long before anyone had even imagined the upper room experience at Pentecost or “being baptised in the Holy Spirit.” Before that experience, how do you suppose the disciples imagined Jesus being with them always?

It’s easy for us today to understand because we have the Biblical account of what happened, and many of us know in our hearts and through our own experiences, that Jesus is with us always.

Action

Pray that today, you will be conscious of Jesus’ company wherever you go and whatever you do.

Ask yourself if there is a situation that you can pray for and invite Holy Spirit intervention whether at home or at work or in whatever you do for leisure. Jesus wants to be involved in ALL our lives, 24/7. That’s why He says I will be with you ALWAYS.
