Followers of Jesus – Day 27

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus that pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

The Thought

This is such a good verse to remember for all of us who consider ourselves “followers of Jesus”. The witnesses mentioned here are listed in the “Bible Hall of Fame” in the previous chapter. An impressive list.

This reference to running a race reminds us that we need to train and stay fit. The way to do that spiritually is to keep an eye on Jesus. He gave us our faith, and He will perfect it in us if we stay in touch with our trainer!

Trying to go it alone is never a good idea, and very few sportsmen have ever succeeded in their own strength. It is the same with the christian life. It can be hard going, and we have to keep listening to what The Trainer says. The disciples were sent out in twos, Paul always had others with him wherever he travelled. Trying to go it alone can be a very slow process and depressing.

The witnesses mentioned in the previous chapter are all good examples for us today. But many of us also have had (or maybe still have) witnesses who have been good examples for us. Friends or family, colleagues, church leaders, others in church…

Action

Read Hebrews 11 and see again what some of the “heroes of faith” went through because of their faith. Thank God for the victories that they won.

Praise God for all the people who have been an example to you throughout your christian life, and ask Him if there is someone He wants you to be a witness to in order to help them become the person God wants them to be.
