The Fig Tree – Day 4

Deuteronomy 8:7-9

The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land … It has wheat and barley, grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates. The land has honey and olive trees for olive oil. The land will have enough food for you, and you will have everything you need.

The Thought

The first direct mention of fig trees, other than the fig leaves in Genesis, tells us that Moses was encouraging the Israelites that God was still with them. As the people looked back over their desert wanderings, their confidence in God’s promises wavered. But Moses was absolutely sure of what God had said, that His promise was still real and He would deliver. And He did!

It is interesting that fig trees are the only trees mentioned here by name. Surely there were other trees in the promised land, what is it about fig trees that is so important? Hopefully we will discover that over the coming days.

The Israelites often became very frustrated during those long desert years, wondering if they would ever reach their destination. They didn’t realise that they had much to repent of along the way. They didn’t understand that their grumbling against Moses and against God was causing further delay. That their suffering was part of a learning programme. They needed to totally submit to the Lord who provided everything they needed miraculously.

Has the Lord made you any promises that you have waited a long time to see fulfilled?

Action

Pray for His timing and for patience for yourself. Spend time seeking the Lord to see if there is anything in your life that is not pleasing to the Lord and is causing the delay.

Since we have these promises, dear friends, we need to cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit and live a holy life in the fear of God. – 2 Corinthians 7:1

Praise God for His forgiveness and that His promises are sure.
