The Fig Tree – Day 26

Haggai 2:19

… The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still haven’t produced. But from now on I will bless you.

The Thought

What would it mean for you if The Lord said “from now on I will bless you”? Do you feel as though everything has been going wrong for too long? That’s how the people felt in Haggai’s time. The had returned from exile to their own land, but things were still not going right for them. They had returned with high expectations, but they were totally self centred, and very quickly forgot the God who brought them home.

In the two short chapters of his prophecy Haggai addressed the problem. He reprimanded the people for caring for themselves and their own property and not God’s house.

Written at the time of Nehemiah who also called for the House of God to be rebuilt, it is a challenge for us today to remember that God still sees everything, and cares that we get our priorities right, that we build what He wants us to build. That could be a church building, but in our day I believe it is more likely to be a “virtual community” than one which is known for its building. The present covid crisis has enabled church to cross national boundaries and to grow in all directions via internet. God is using the crisis to build His church, and the gates of Hell will not stand against it! Hallelujah (Matthew 16:18)!

God wanted a Holy people living according to His holy commands in His Holy Land. He still wants a Holy people living according to His holy commands wherever He has planted us.

Action

Pray for yourself, your family and your local government to get their priorities right. Pray for the discipline to put God’s wishes first.
