The Life of Joseph – Day 15
Genesis 42:3-5
Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him. So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.
The Thought
We read here of a parent fearing for his son. His previous experience had left a long lasting scar, and his treatment of the youngest of his children was consequently different. Benjamin was not allowed to leave home because Joseph had done so and never returned. How many people today suffer from a parental discipline which resulted from a previous bad experience?
Many people have visited psychiatrists and psychologists looking for inner peace after serious family problems either as a child, or as an adult, but only God can really bring deep healing.
Joseph himself, without his faith, could have suffered deep psychological hurts because of the way he was treated by his brothers, and we are not told how he was treated by the Ishmaelites who bought him and took him to Egypt! Interestingly, in Genesis 37, it was the Ishmaelites who bought Jospeh, but the Midianites who sold him to Potiphar’s household. Opinions vary on why this is, either the two tribes were related or the names are different titles for the same people group. It is not important for our study!
Action
Think today how many parents treat their children according to hurts from their own past. We are all affected by unresolved issues concerning past experiences, unless we receive divine healing! That is always available through Jesus.
The Lord tells us to forget the former things and not to dwell on the past (Isaiah 43:18) because He is doing a new thing!
Pray for “new things” to be evident in your own life and those you care for today.
