The Fig Tree – Day 6

Joel 2:21-22

Do not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice. Surely the Lord has done great things! Do not be afraid, you wild animals, for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green. The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree and the vine yield their riches. – NIV

The Thought

Joel chapter 2 is one of the scary chapters that speak of the end of the world as we know it. We can see many of those things happening right now as I write this early in 2021. But in God’s word, there is always a promise of good things too.

It is interesting that we read here that “the trees” (in general) will give fruit. Yet the fig tree will yield “riches” along with the vine! It is a word of encouragement in Joel’s prophecy that after things have become very bad they will get better. Many of us will be pleased to be thinking that after almost a year of lockdowns and curfews because of covid 19!

Here we read that the fig trees and vines will yield riches. Could this statement have a symbolic meaning as well as a literal one? In the Genesis verse that we looked at, we saw that Adam and Eve used fig leaves to cover their nakedness, their sin. Could the fig tree be a symbol of our sin being covered by what Jesus has done for us? In New Testament times wine from the grapevines became symbolic of Jesus’ blood shed to cover our sins. Could these be the symbolic riches referred to in this verse?

Action

Praise God for His redemption referred to all through the Bible and be encouraged.

Pray for the stamina to cope with what is happening in the world, and rejoice that something better is coming.
