Esther – Day 21

The Bible tells us there is wisdom in the advice of others but also clarifies that it must be from good counsellors. How different the plans of Haman would have been if he had got to know Mordecai and his God who gives good advice, wants to bless not curse.

Esther 5:14

His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him “Have a pole set up, reaching to a height of fifty cubits and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai impaled on it. Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.” This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the pole set up.

The Thought

The Bible tells us several times there is wisdom in the advice of others (Proverbs 13:10, 15:22 and 24:6) but it also clarifies that it must be advice from good counsellors. How different the plans of Haman would have been if he had got to know Mordecai and his God, the God who gives good advice and wants to bless and not curse. King David said of Him: You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory Psalm 73:24

What blood thirsty friends and family Haman had. What was their purpose in giving such advice? Did they think they would share in some of the wealth he was receiving from the king? Were they just bad friends? It seems far from our western civilisation’s way of thinking, but we must remember that it is a true story. Evil people plan evil things still today. The devil was beaten by Jesus at the cross, but he is not giving up, and will fight to the end of time. Only prayer and knowing Jesus can protect us from satan’s evil ways.

Action

Read Matthew 5 today and hear some of the good advice coming straight from God through His Son. In verses 43-44 we read: You have heard it said “Love your neighbour and hate your enemy, but I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Pray today for those with whom you don’t have as good a relationship as you would like, asking Father God to help you love them.
