Doors & Gates – Day 21

Revelation 22:14

Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

The Thought

In this last chapter of the Bible we have the last mention of a gate or a doorway. It is the gate through to the Holy City in the centre of the Heavenly realm. Earlier in the book of Revelation we can read descriptions of the 12 gates that lead into this Holy City.

Each gate, made of a single pearl, is named after one of the tribes of Israel. And each is guarded by an angel. There are three on each side of the heavenly square (Revelation 21:12-13) but there is limited access to the Holy city. Our verse for today tells us that only those who have “washed their robes” may go through one of those gates.

I have found only one other mention of washing robes. That is in Revelation 7:14 where we read that those who have come out of the great tribulation, are the ones who have “washed their robes”. It is a picture of spiritual cleansing or suffering for Jesus.

Life on earth is one lived in the presence of the demonic forces, and all of us are affected by them. Giving our hearts and lives to Jesus is often described as being “washed in His blood”. Baptism is a picture of this cleansing by His blood.

How frustrating it must be to get to Heaven and be able to see the amazing gates to Holy city at the centre but not be allowed entry because we didn’t “obey the rules” on the earth.

Action

Pray today for yourself and all those you care for that each one will respond to all the Lord asks of us on the earth. So that they we may all be allowed access into the Heavenly city.

Read the last few chapters of Revelation and be encourage by the happy ending and glorious eternal future prepared for believers.
