Doors & Gates – Day 28

Psalm 24:7

Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in.

The Thought

This short psalm begins with a proclamation of THE TRUTH. I put that in capital letters because it really is The Eternal Truth. The earth is The Lord’s and everything in it (Psalm 24:1). The verse goes on to explain that the earth belongs to God because He made it. It didn’t happen by accident, but by the planning of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They still have a plan for it today!

There are several verses in the psalms which call on creation or created things to praise the God of all creation. In the verse quoted today, we have a call to the old doors and gates of the city to open and welcome their king and creator.

We have looked at several verses throughout this month telling us of some of the things that go on at the city gate or the king’s gate, and I hope that as you read this psalm you will visualise the old city gates being opened, going upward on their old chains to allow the King and His entourage through into the city. What a great picture that is!

The psalm goes on to ask who can stand near the gate as it opens to the King. Imagine the pageantry as chosen regiments line the route to the gate and on into the heart of the city. What a privilege it must have been in those days to be chosen to line the royal route. It is still the same when royalty travel today. When a reigning monarch or world leader, or the Pope visit other places; the streets are lined with onlookers who can’t get near enough because of the protective forces.

Read this psalm today and allow yourself to see in your mind’s eye, the picture of the King of Creation entering His Holy city. Rejoice that you will be there when the scene replays in Heaven one day.
