Doors & Gates – Day 15

Proverbs 5:8-9

Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you lose your honour to others and your dignity to one who is cruel.

The Thought

Who is the female referred to here? Verse 3 tells us she is “the adulterous woman”. The writer of Proverbs has much to say as he tries to warn his son to keep on the straight and narrow road. He obviously sees danger in wrong relationships and especially those with women. There are warnings against getting involved with the wrong woman several times throughout the 30 chapters. But in the last chapter, he describes the perfect wife, often referred to as the Proverbs 31 lady.

The point, from this verse, for us in our study of doors is that we should not go near the doors marked “danger”! As adults all of us can imagine those areas where we should not go. There are parts of every town where it is better not to know what goes on behind closed doors. Sadly there are respectable parts of town where bad things are happening too.

Solomon is accepted as the writer of Proverbs. He was trying to warn his sons not to go down the path he had gone down himself. History tells us that Solomon had a thousand wives. So we can imagine that he knew a lot about women and his advice to keep away from the wrong areas was genuine.

The fact is that there are “spiritual doors” that lead in the wrong direction for believers. It is better as Solomon says, to “not go near their doors”.

If you are a parent, give some thought and prayer today about protecting your children from the temptations of the world we live in.

Pray for each one of your friends and family for protection from opening the “wrong” doors.
