Doors & Gates – Day 13

Proverbs 26:14

As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed.

The Thought

This verse makes me smile as I imagine a door being opened and shut all day long. Or maybe it stays open all day long because nobody bothers to shut it properly. The door itself serves little purpose and accomplishes nothing. In the same way the sluggard or lazy person accomplishes nothing by just tossing and turning on his bed all day thinking about what he will do when he gets up!

Sadly many believers are too much like the door, we go through the same routine each day. We say the same prayers, we give the Lord our “Christian moments” each day, but they don’t achieve too much, or at least we think they don’t, but God sees our intentions and is pleased with what we do for Him however small the task or time we give Him.

God inspired the inventions of the first doors thousand of years ago to fulfill a purpose, and they still do that today even though we could look with a critical eye and say that all they do is swing on their hinges.

A closed door can protect us from bad weather, help to keep our space warm. A locked door will keep the evil people out and protect those on the inside. Sometimes a closed door gives us privacy, and keeps spying eyes away.

Many of us have gone through prayers of deliverance when we have symbolically closed the door to a spiritual enemy that has been tormenting us in the past, and we have opened a spiritual door to Jesus (as in Holman Hunt’s painting, see yesterday’s post) to allow Him to be Lord of our life.

Action

As you go through your day today be aware of all the doors you see, and praise God for each one fulfilling their purpose.
