Creation – Day 21

Job 42:3

Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

The Thought

There is so much in the book of Job that is pertinent to our day, and so many sins that he confesses could challenge us in our daily conversations.

I am certainly guilty of speaking of things that I don’t know enough about. Aren’t we all? And don’t we all listen to and quote bits of the news or things we read or heard about on internet? Christians even do it with the Bible, regularly quoting the verses they like without keeping them in context or knowing the full story.

When Job got a fuller revelation of who God really is, he “repented in dust and ashes”. (Job 42:6)

The beginning of the verse used for today is Job quoting God who had asked him “Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?”

That is a challenging question for many of us. Do we realise that when we misquote the Bible or talk about God in human terms we could well be obscuring His plans? We must remember daily that God will help us say the right thing at the right time if we trust Him. Remember Moses who said he couldn’t go and talk to Pharaoh because he had a speech problem, and God reacted angrily ending with “NOW GO! I will help you speak and will teach you what to say”. (Exodus 4:12)

In Matthew 10 we have the orders of Jesus sending out the twelve on their first mission trip. In verse 19 we get the reassurance: “When they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say…”. I wonder how encouraging they felt that was!

Action

Pray today about the words you use. Whether talking about current affairs or Jesus.

Ask God to purify your speech and help you say the right things about faith.

Praise Him for His inspiration when you talk about Him.
