Children of God – Day 20

Romans 8:15

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

The Thought

Let’s take a second look at this verse, focussing today on the characteristics of the Father who is ready to adopt us as sons and daughters if you prefer. But in Biblical times it was normal to talk about the heirs as sons. Way back in the Old Testament while the Israelites were still wandering in the desert God made it clear that daughters could have an inheritance in the same way as sons (Numbers 27:1-11).

If your father was one of the richest men in the world you would have no financial worries. Or if your father was a great medical doctor, you would have very few health worries. If your father was an influential judge, you would have no legal worries. You would have no educational worries if your father was a highly qualified professor. If your father owned a great retailing company, you would have no difficulty finding what you wanted. If your father was a real estate agent, you would have no housing worries. Are you getting the picture that your Heavenly Father is all of these and more?

The “ifs” in these lines suppose that your earthly father is a good and generous father, wanting the best for you His child, even if he is not perfect. You have a perfect Heavenly Father who will give you everything you need, as long as you live as His child, having the relationship with Him that means you understand His love, His protection, and His provision.

Action

Pray for the Heavenly Father to show you what He is for you today.

Praise Him that whatever your needs are, He is the answer through Jesus.

Read the story of Zelophehad’s daughters in Numbers 27:1-11 and be encouraged.
