Thought 10

1 Kings 13:2 (again)

He cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD : “O altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who now make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’ “

Jeroboam was an evil king, and during his reign many abominations happened, (1 Kings 12) but the Lord had a plan to put things right, and he sent this unnamed prophet to foretell what would happen 300 years later. In the next verse the prophet declared that the altar would split apart as a sign that this word was from the Lord. Read the rest of the chapter and see that this did happen immediately in front of Jeroboam who lifted his hand to arrest the prophet, but his hand withered and would not move!

God will stand so much and no more. The hand that was raised against the man of God represented the highest authority in the Land, but God’s authority and power was higher.

Pray today for more prophets to speak out against the abominations in our lands. Pray that you will recognize yourself where there are things to speak out against, and for the boldness to do what God would have you do.

Thought 11

2 Kings 23:16

Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.

300 years after the prophecy we read in our previous thought, it happened. God put in place a godly king (the name Josiah means “Jehovah supports”) to put right some of the evil that had happened. Josiah found the books of the law, reinstalled Godly worship, and burned the remains of the bad priests. Are you called to put things right in your home or workplace today? Too often we ask the Lord to do things when He is asking us to do them. He has given us authority!

Pray that you use your God given authority wisely today. Pray for a turning to the Lord in your community, region and country.

Praise the Lord that He doesn’t give up on us, but sends His prophets and teachers to turn people back to Him.

Thought 12

Habakkuk 3:16

I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us.

Habakkuk is scared, and the chill of fear reaches his bones. He lived in one of the most difficult periods of Judah’s history. There was violence, oppression, threat of war. Not unlike our world today. Does listening to the news fill you with dread? What do you fear in your innermost being?

Read on in Habakkuk to see the decision that he made to not look at the earthly difficulties, but to keep his eyes focused on Heaven. He knew that no matter what happened, his security was in the Lord, and he made the concrete decision to praise Him no matter what. Can you do the same today?

Pray for strength to lift your eyes and keep them fixed on Jesus today. Pray for the church to keep its eyes fixed on Jesus and not to become like the world.

Praise God that He is seated far above earthly problems.
