Creation – Day 3

Genesis 1:2-3

The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light” and there was light.

The Thought

One of the most important things to note in these verses is that God said something and it happened. God was not a body in a workshop somewhere working as a potter creating things over time. He was a Spirit who spoke. (He still is !) When He spoke, things happened.

There is much in the Bible concerning the power of words. Most of us understand the power of God’s words, and those spoken by Jesus when He just said a word and someone was healed (Luke 7:7).

What we must learn here is that because we are made in God’s image our words are powerful too. Jesus told us to go and do what He had done (Matthew 28:19-20 & Mark 16:17). That means speaking healing to others as He did.

Proverbs 18:21 tells us that “the tongue has the power of life and death”. I think every page in the book of Proverbs has at least one verse about the tongue or the power of our words.

But the other thing I find fascinating in this verse is the light itself. What was this light? It wasn’t the sun because that wasn’t created until day 4! This was just light! I find that unimaginable, because the only natural source of light that I have experienced is from the sun, or maybe a flash of lightening from time to time.

Action

Thank God for His light, and for all that is hidden in His word if we take time to look.

Pray for a deeper understanding of all that God created in that first week of the earth’s history. Ask Him to show you the relevance of understanding that week in your life today.

Think about the power of the spoken word and ask Him to show you if you need to watch what you say – about yourself, and about others.
