The Last – Day 24

Revelation 1:17

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. Then He placed His right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.

The Thought

This verse always makes me smile! John being touched and talked to by what could be a ghost was what was making him afraid! We do not know if John had had visions before, but this one was very real, and the beginning of it caused John to faint.

Jesus touched the prostrate disciple so that at least he could hear what was being said as he received orders from his Saviour and Lord; The One who described Himself as The Living One (Revelation 1:18)! Those orders were to write what John saw and heard so that hundreds of generations later, you and I could know the truth. Jesus had even called Himself The Truth many years earlier (John 14:6).

The disciples and many others had seen that Jesus had overcome death 3 days after the crucifixion, but later they had seen Him ascend to Heaven and they didn’t expect to see Him again in person. How wrong they were!

It was obviously God’s plan that John be isolated on the island of Patmos, because there, he would have nobody to talk to and endless time to spend in prayer and in the Spirit (Revelation 1:10, 4:2, 17:3).

Action

Think today on the meaning of Jesus describing Himself as The First and The Last. He was there before the first day, and will be there at the end of time. Hallelujah!

Read Revelation 1 and imagine the scene. Does it frighten you, or make you envious of John? Maybe it makes you decide to spend more time in the Spirit.

Pray today for the people you love who do not recognise Jesus as The Truth.
